Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
